Wave of Interest

Wow, thanks everyone. Just checked the site stats and today I had my most one-day looks, so thanks for reading.

After weeks of lousy winds and dribble of surf we are finally in a good pattern for surf. It always makes me more busy having good waves on tap, I seem to recharge faster and be more productive when the waves are good.

The above shot was done after a family portrait session I had on the Northshore last week. The couple were wedding clients who came back to visit family with their toddler daughter, and after a good hour photographing them she had her fill of the smiling fellow with the black box making her laugh and it was nap time.

I still had some great light, and seeing some small yet fun waves at Sunset Beach I pulled out a long lens and did some wave shots. There was a little zone of backwash and refraction action, so I cranked up the shutter speed on the Nikon D3s to give that frozen water look, and waited for the fun. I was using my dear old friend, the manual focus Nikkor 400mm f/2.8 ED-IF Ais. I’ve had this lens since the early 1990’s and we go way back so manual focusing the wildly moving waves is actually easy for me (and fun). It takes a while to learn how to ‘follow focus’ these long fast telephotos, these days most people rely on the camera’s autofocus (with varying levels of success). I like to keep my skill set honed so I bust out this lens now and then to keep my fingers nimble and my eyes sharp.
